An outboard motor, also called outboard engine, is a marine propulsion system which always is mounted on the outer transom of the boat. Today Parsunwill introduce the structure of the outboard motor.
One of the main features of outboard engines is that they are removable and easy to use. Therefore, outboard engines are the most common way to power a ship for maneuvering.
The outboard engine consists of three main parts: the power head, the intermediate section and the underwater unit.
The power head is on the top of the outboard and is an engine system integrating the fuel system, cooling system, gas distribution system, ignition system, gearbox, and maneuvering control system, which mainly provides torque for the outboard.
The fuel system is the engine oil supply. Small and medium-sized outboards usually have built-in fuel tanks, while large outboards need external fuel tanks.
Gas distribution and ignition is the engine, including the engine block, crankshaft, cylinder head (spark plug, valve, cam).
Unlike car engines, rear-operated outboard models have operating handles with throttle controls on them.
The transmission system is located in the middle section of the outboard, and there are long and short shafts. The middle section of the outboard has an integrated mounting bracket, housing and a small motor (only for high power outboards). The main function of the mounting bracket is to fix the outboard to the transom. At the same time, the outboard can be tilted with the help of the motor. Small outboards are manually cocked. There are cooling water pipes in the middle section of the housing, where the water flows directly to the power head. There is also a drive shaft that connects the power head to the propulsion unit and transmits the power to the propeller.
The underwater unit is located at the bottom of the outboard, and the whole is below the water surface. It integrates the transmission, drive shaft, and propeller, and its main function is to transfer the torque from the engine to the propeller, and the propeller turns to produce the power required by the hull. So there is a gear box here with several kinds of gears in it.
