How does an outboard motor work?

Nov. 09, 2022

The outboard is mounted on the transom of the boat. A two-stroke outboard requires a mixture of oil and gasoline to be poured into the fuel tank. Four-stroke outboards are already pre-filled with oil and only need to fill up fuel. Despite the difference in usage, the working principle of 4-stroke outboard and 2-stroke outboard is basically the same.

Start the outboard manually or electrically, control the outboard forward by operating the handle, and you are ready to set sail.

As to the question how the outboard motor works, I think we don't need to pay too much attention to it. Because for professionals, it’s too simple. But for non-professionals, it is too difficult to understand, even though an answer is provided to them. So what we should know is how to drive.

The following is the basic working process of the outboard engine.

above is a hugely simplified pic to show the components of an outboard motor.

1、Fuel burns in the cylinder (or cylinders) to make power. There's a fuel tank inside the case of the motor at the top, or an external tank, big enough to hold gas. The heavier your boat, the faster you drive it, the choppier the water, the more heavily loaded, or the lower in the water it sits, the more fuel you'll burn.

2、Powered by the burning and expanding fuel gases, a piston moves back and forth in the cylinder. Actually you should know what your motor is two stroke engine or four stroke engine, the latter is a trend for outboard motors.

3、The piston rod turns the crankshaft, converting the back-and-forth (reciprocating) motion of the piston into round-and-round (rotary) motion.

4、The crankshaft turns the main driveshaft running down the long spine of the motor.

5、A small gearbox at the bottom of the driveshaft converts vertical spinning motion into horizontal spinning motion.

6、The propeller powered by horizontally spinning gears powers the boat through the water.
